HOPE

I gazed through the walkway, an unassuming path that screamed danger. I ignored the warning. My desire for freedom was like an unquenchable thirst. I would allow nothing to stand in my way.

It was my sixteenth birthday and the exact hour of my birth, the moment when we were given the option to join the cult or take the path to the unknown. Did I have the nerve?

Was it courage to want a life that didn't start with a motherhood before my seventeenth birthday? If I didn't make it through the gauntlet, it meant death.

I chose.

Hope.

YELLOW FEATHERS

"COD?" I asked the coroner while surveying the area. The patio of Sara Palin's home, a well-known and highly controversial politician.

"By the look on her face, I'd say she was scared to death. Most likely heart attack. You knew her; did she have a bad ticker?"

"Not that I'm aware, but she was scared to death of birds. You think that cluster of yellow feathers had anything to do with her death?"

"In subdued light, it's possible, I'll know more after the autopsy, but really murder by Ornithophobia and piñata. Now I can honestly say I've heard it all!"

ALIEN MAID

A flash fiction challenge of 100 words or less

The photo prompt copyright Roger Bultot .

ALIEN MAID

At the company Christmas party, Arthur, my boss, made a pass. I rejected him. Left early.

The elevator doors open and I'm no longer on Earth.

Somewhere, thousands of light years from home I've been sold into slavery.

A former scientist, I now wear the uniform of a maid.

During my last job, I carried a tray of appetizers into a gathering of the planet's elite. Arthur stood among them. His human form gone. But an alien frame couldn't hide the eyes that deceived.

On my next pass through the room, the tray hid my knife.

Arthur enslaves no more.

RENDEZVOUS

A flash fiction challenge of 100 words or less

The photo prompt copyright C.E. Ayr.

RENDEZVOUS

He met her in a bookstore. Laci liked science fiction. He preferred horror. Tonight they'd celebrate their first anniversary. She'd tell him she was pregnant. He'd tell her of the job offer that would rescue them from poverty.

Dinner at their favorite Paris Café with so many things to celebrate, Jacques felt as though they had the world at their feet.

An hour before their rendezvous, terrorists attacked.

Two days later, they walked in silence down the sidewalk on the Boulevard Voltaire.

He held her close. She wiped away tears. The sound of angels weeping still echoed through the streets.

WARS & BATTLES

A flash fiction challenge of 100 words or less

The photo prompt copyright  J Hardy Carroll.

WARS & BATTLES

John fought to come home just for them. When he left, she was pregnant. He knew his daughter, Jenny, only through Mary's words and photographs. He couldn't wait to hold them close. His mission finally ended, he boarded the plane home.

50 years later

At the cemetery, he watched them play, both so beautiful, unchanging, and full of love for him. He'd survived the war, but a drunk driver on the way to his next drink stole them from him.

He hoped Mary would be glad to hear that he only had weeks left. Cancer would win this final battle.

Moonlight Ballet

The light that filtered through the hundreds of colorful bottles in my uncle's house created unusual ballets on the dull surfaces. Sometimes I could swear I heard whispers.

The purple bottle intrigued me the most. One moonlit night I spied a dancing beam. Against orders, I touched the bottle. An electrical charge shot through me and light filled the room.

Instantaneously my missing parents stood before me.

My uncle thundered into the room, his demonic form revealed.

Safely cocooned in my parent's luminosity, I saw a ray of fire emanating from the remaining bottles hold him spellbound until he disintegrated.

HARLOT

HARLOT

Mary caressed the photograph remembering their honeymoon in the ancient capital of the Burgundy province of Dijon, France. The wonderful romantic strolls through historic streets while planning their future.

"You said you'd always love, cherish, and adore only me, but she entered your life, and I no longer exist. Her emerald eyes, cherub cheeks, and that melt your heart smile.

"I've lost you my love, but I refuse to admit defeat, and I will never accept this harlot.

"Despite your assurances you'll always be mine, I hold no love for our daughter. She is the ruination of my life."

DETOUR

PHOTO PROMPT © Stephen Baum

DETOUR

We'd been crawling for hours, the light ahead our only guide. I concentrated, imagining the cold beer, soft bed, and workshops.

The scarf wrapped tightly around my nose and mouth did little to filter the smell of blood, shit, or the decaying stench of wasting bodies.

Despite our efforts to carefully crawl over the dead below us. My gloveless hand always found that raw open wound, eye socket, or unidentifiable collection of tissue and fluids that would make my stomach lurch in revolt.

Zombie apocalypse my ass, the road to the 2016 World Horror Convention took a death defying detour!

ANT FARM

ANT FARM

I've visited the ant farm, even spray-painted my initials on the 63' Sedan. Dad loved his baby-blue caddy, a testament to his success. I remember racing it down the road and choking on the dust cloud swirling like a comet tale as he drove away.

Memories of him tinkering, washing, and polishing Abby, a car named after me, are all I have, that and a few faded photographs. Dad was handsome; the ladies loved him. I wonder if he loved anyone.

Mom married Hank, a mean son-of-a-bitch.

Stuffing Hank's carcass in the tail of that monument somehow seems apropos.

RUNAWAY

RUNAWAY

I've relocated before. Disowned at sixteen, I showed them and graduated college, then graduate school. I more than survived, I excelled.

The second time I was running for my life. Hidden bruises would never compare to the emotional baggage his terror produced.

The third time I went in search of opportunity because a manager refused to recognize my skills, after all, I'm merely a woman.

Today, as I walk that lonely road and explore my new cities crowded streets alone, I have to wonder, especially after thirty years together; maybe running is just an excuse for not trying harder.
