Friday Fictioneers - Deadlines

PHOTO PROMPT © Roger Bultot

DEADLINES

Sipping tea, Angela stared out at the dark blue sky. The lights of the city flickered in the distance. Not stars. There were never any stars. Oh, how she longed for the country and the true night sky with the Milky Way trailing a path through the cosmos. Inspiring romance and adventure.

Or did she desire the cloudy night that created a blackness so thick it penetrated the soul? Encouraging evil. Inviting terror. Warping the mind and inciting hellish nightmares.

She smiled, shook off the melancholy, and finished her tea. Dawn was an hour away, and her deadline was noon.

PART OF THE SCENERY

It had always been his dream. Traveling Route 66 was just one of my husband's chosen road trips.

He'd purchased the perfect motor home; it held everything needed for ease during cross-country excursions. Economical, and yet with every creature comfort!

His retirement choice wasn't mine.

I wanted the beach, an endless view, not mindless rutted roads with repeated views of meadows and trees. Or living with strangers and repeated smoke filled nights around campfires listening to the same dull stories and swatting mosquitoes.

Murder will out!

Now I reside here, my ashes trampled under the feet of other Route 66 tourists!

HOPE

I gazed through the walkway, an unassuming path that screamed danger. I ignored the warning. My desire for freedom was like an unquenchable thirst. I would allow nothing to stand in my way.

It was my sixteenth birthday and the exact hour of my birth, the moment when we were given the option to join the cult or take the path to the unknown. Did I have the nerve?

Was it courage to want a life that didn't start with a motherhood before my seventeenth birthday? If I didn't make it through the gauntlet, it meant death.

I chose.

Hope.

TOO EASY

"Like leading sheep to slaughter!" Greer laughed and threw another shovel of dirt.

Monkee-See-Do, the latest mobile app had inspired his technological but sociopathic mind. Greer had fashioned hacking magic, and now his victims came to him.

The grave covered, he took in his surroundings. The trees were greener and stood taller. Soon nutritious fresh grass would cover the ground. Greer had given his animals a cool and delicious place to graze.

He smiled. Monkee-See-Do now compensated him with a growing bank account and the solution for poor soil - the perfect fertilizer – the clueless with their heads up their asses.

NO PARKING

I told you not to park there!

Calm down. We'll find out where they're towing it too and pay the fine.

So much for hiding our time machine in plain sight. What if someone hits the wrong button?

Quit panicking. I created the remote starter for a reason. All we have to do is lock it down, and no matter what button they hit, nothing will happen. Just hand me the beach bag and I'll make sure.

You mean that cute blue and white number I bought yesterday.

Exactly!

Uh, sorry, but it's on the back seat of the car.

SPRING FLOWERS

Friday Fictioneers is hosted by Rochelle Wisoff-Fields @ Addicted to Purple. She has supplied us with a new photo prompt via The Reclining Gentleman To participate simply write a complete story in 100 words or less.
As Rochelle says, make every word count!

SPRING FLOWERS

I plant my favorite flowers in the community garden for all to enjoy. The first to bloom, the cheerful daffodil, with crocuses not far behind, then the tulips, a constant display of color and beauty.

My husband would be unmoved, and yet I can't help but think of him.

George and his girlfriend, Juliet, prepared for a quick escape to Rio, after cleaning out my bank account. Foiled them I did, well, my murderous hearted brother, and me. His handiwork, their downfall.

Now my brother celebrates freedom in Rio and I plant flowers on the grave of George and Juliet.

TEMPTATION

I love rowing out to the old pier, long ago recaptured by the ocean. The silence calls to me, the isolation fills me with warmth, and the view – a city of potential mermaids makes my heart pump like that of a young stag.

I come here only during the daylight hours. When my mermaids frolic and play in the currents. Their beauty undeniable, their loving embraces my temptation.

At night, the moonlight turns them ravenous, deadly. Although, their sirens song does mesmerize as it combines with that of the bullfrog's baritone. Only a fool would answer, for certain death follows.

ALIEN MAID

A flash fiction challenge of 100 words or less

The photo prompt copyright Roger Bultot .

ALIEN MAID

At the company Christmas party, Arthur, my boss, made a pass. I rejected him. Left early.

The elevator doors open and I'm no longer on Earth.

Somewhere, thousands of light years from home I've been sold into slavery.

A former scientist, I now wear the uniform of a maid.

During my last job, I carried a tray of appetizers into a gathering of the planet's elite. Arthur stood among them. His human form gone. But an alien frame couldn't hide the eyes that deceived.

On my next pass through the room, the tray hid my knife.

Arthur enslaves no more.

RENDEZVOUS

A flash fiction challenge of 100 words or less

The photo prompt copyright C.E. Ayr.

RENDEZVOUS

He met her in a bookstore. Laci liked science fiction. He preferred horror. Tonight they'd celebrate their first anniversary. She'd tell him she was pregnant. He'd tell her of the job offer that would rescue them from poverty.

Dinner at their favorite Paris Café with so many things to celebrate, Jacques felt as though they had the world at their feet.

An hour before their rendezvous, terrorists attacked.

Two days later, they walked in silence down the sidewalk on the Boulevard Voltaire.

He held her close. She wiped away tears. The sound of angels weeping still echoed through the streets.

NATURE'S SOLUTION™

This is a Friday Fictioneers Flash Fiction Challenge. Hosted by Rochelle Wisoff-Fields  and all based off a photo. This weeks prompt is provided by and copyright to Connie Gayer.

Rochelle requires participants, in 100 words or less write about the picture provided. You can read this week’s stories by clicking on the Blue Links and the Blue Frog.

NATURE'S SOLUTION

The sand held hints of the lives lost, strands of wire, coins, and jewels buried deep. Treasure hunters with metal detectors crisscrossed the beach for days. The land was devoid of its former glory. The city was gone, and its entire population too.

A breezy summer morning determined to be a hot blistering day had turned apocalyptic. A rogue wave forty stories high hit the coast. In the blink of an eye, the resort disappeared. Mom and Dad had planned their retirement for years but barely had the chance to enjoy the fruits of their labor before nature heartlessly rebelled.

VANITY

I walked towards traffic; my blood trailing in gelatinous plops would soon be washed away. The sky darkened above a layer of nimbus clouds that looked ready to release a deluge of biblical proportion.

Why wouldn't they believe me when I told them he was violent? The life of the party, the man who went out of his way for others had decided I no longer deserved to live. Well, I'd show him.

The hospital was just ahead. I gingerly carried my head. I wondered if the doctors could reattach it without leaving ugly scars.

Vanity is such a curse.
