TUCKED AWAY

TUCKED AWAY

I danced through the snowflakes like the ballerina from my favorite ballet, Swan Lake. I've always loved winter especially how it tasted on my tongue, frosty, light, and clean. I looked around. Snow, brilliant white, and fresh surrounded me. The trees sparkled as though doused in diamond glitter. The lake while almost frozen solid showed bits of blue swirl as though just created with a painter's brush.
I couldn't remember where I was, how I'd gotten here, and then a voice pierced the atmosphere.
"Your daughter and all our cryogenic residents are safely tucked away until science catches up."

I like how you fooled the reader into thinking we were really in the winter scene just like the narrator. Nice take on the picture.

Dear Yolanda Renee

I hope science catches up. An imaginative take on the prompt.

Shalom,

Rochelle

Both sad and scary.

Sandra Crook said...

Frightening. A nice concept well executed.

Jo said...

We will never know, but I don't think cryogenics is going to work. Great story again.

Yolanda Renée said...

Hi Claire,
Thanks! I love knowing the picture is from a library.I saw it a rather unique storage system. :)

Unknown said...

There are so many different takes on this pic. So good is yours.

Yolanda Renée said...

Thanks Rochelle, your choice of prompt is always inspired! Love this.

Raj said...

Lovely twist at the end.

Yolanda Renée said...

Thanks Alex, it is isn't it.

Yolanda Renée said...

Thanks Sandra, I thought your piece was truly inspired and fun!

Yolanda Renée said...

Hi Jo, You don't hear about it much anymore, but with cloning a possibility you no longer need the body. Wonder what they'll do with all the ones in storage?

Yolanda Renée said...

Thanks Patrick, moving on to yours next. I always love the differences!

L.G. Keltner said...

I loved the imagery of the lake looking as though it had been painted, and the twist at the end was wonderful!

Yolanda Renée said...

Thanks Rajesh, twists are my speciality!

Yolanda Renée said...

Hi L. G.
Thanks, a bit of the WEP Spectacular Settings brilliance rubbing off, I hope!

Pat Hatt said...

Cryogenics is a long way off from working, if ever, they may be there a while lol

Yolanda Renée said...

Hi Pat, I'm thinking it's no longer needed, especially with cloning? But those already there, yes, a long wait!

Sally said...

Great story - lovely take on the prompt - cryogenics could be the future for the privileged few.

Yolanda Renée said...

Hi Sally, thanks, I would've thought that cloning would replace it!

The Happy Whisk said...

Sad one but done well. You rock at these.

H.R. Bennett said...

Interesting consideration. Dream? Or Mental Relief of Trauma?

Yolanda Renée said...

Thanks Ivy, you rock at recipes!

Yolanda Renée said...

Or passed on and waiting for judgement? Who knows, imagination at work! Thanks Robert.

draliman said...

Nice turn-around. I wonder what world they'll wake up to? Might be all ice and snow for real!

Yolanda Renée said...

Maybe, but it does sound better than the opposite. Hi Alistair, thanks!

Priceless Joy said...

What a wonderful story! Although sad, I loved the twist at the end! I too hope science catches up.

The Armchair Squid said...

Nice! A little bit Tchaikovsky, a little bit Rip Van Winkle, a little bit Ted Williams.

Robyn Campbell said...

Ooo, what a twist! Man, I think you are the queen of twists, Yolanda, my friend. LOVE this. VERY well written. You shine, I mean GLOW. :-)

Unknown said...

I love the description of how winter tastes! :)

Michael Di Gesu said...

Hi, Renee,

You are really writing some fantastic flash.... keep up the good work!

Mark Koopmans said...

Ha! Nicely done, and it does beg the question - who is the voice? Was he/she once frozen? (and not in a Disney way :)

Have a great, warm weekend, Yolanda!

Long may her dreams carry her away to a better place.

Wonderfully done. Have a great weekend!

Wow, what an idea! Imagine if all the cryogenically frozen actually maintained cognizance and could hear everything but had to live in their own head/dreams/nightmares for hundreds of years. Great flash, Yolanda!

Susan Flett Swiderski said...

I love how your mind works. You came up with an interesting take on that picture.

I prefer more moderate temperatures, so I don't think I wanta be frozen. If anyone wants to "cure" me after I'm gone, they're gonna have to bring me back from the ashes. Um,okay. Not exactly moderate there, either...

Happy weekend!

Nilanjana Bose said...

Wow, great twist! A bit scary. Your flashes are always superb.

Gah Learner said...

I love this. The winter scene is beautiful, the twist surprising, and a bit scary. I think it would be great if drifting into cryogenic sleep (which might still be an option for long-distance space flight if it ever works reliably) could give you such lovely images to dream about.

Yolanda Renée said...

I agree pleasant dreams would be wonderful, especially if it was for a long span of time! Thank Ga H!

Yolanda Renée said...

Hi Nila, thanks!
I loved your flash for the WEP - just excellent!

Yolanda Renée said...

Hi Susan, sometimes I like how my mind works too, sometimes, not so much! :)
Know what you mean, it's ashes for me too!

Yolanda Renée said...

Hi Lexa, does make you wonder doesn't it? What does that bit of energy do while you sleep?

Yolanda Renée said...

You too Christine, enjoy your family!

Yolanda Renée said...

Hi Rosey, I hope so too!

Yolanda Renée said...

Hi Mark, yes she's frozen, but not her mind. It's doing a bit of wandering on it's own. Have a great weekend too, and warm it will be!

Yolanda Renée said...

Hi Michael, thanks. I keep trying - not such a good idea to post at almost 2AM though, too many errors get past you. :) Hopefully, I caught them all.

Yolanda Renée said...

Thanks Lara, I like how winter tastes!

Yolanda Renée said...

Hi Robyn,
I do like a good twist. You're sweet.

Yolanda Renée said...

Hey Squid,
You're right, a little bit of all of them. :)

I keep meaning to sign up for your blog hop and then get distracted. I really need to organize my reviews and get it done!

Yolanda Renée said...

Hi Joy, I think the folks who believe this will work, are very brave. Science will eventually.

dolorah said...

That was lovely Yolanda. I do hope to participate in the October challenge. Have a good weekend.

Alice Audrey said...

Great twist at the end. They paint the process as peaceful, but what if you don't lose consciousness?

Denise Covey said...

Fantastic Yolanda. Loved it. Your descriptions are amazing! Do you think Spectacular Settings helped?

Yolanda Renée said...

You too Donna, looking forward to your post. Thanks!

Yolanda Renée said...

Thanks Alice, does make one wonder!

Yolanda Renée said...

Of course, I hope I learn something new everyday and then apply it. But yes Spectacular Settings was wonderful, and not because I was involved, but because of all the other folks who participated. Just wonderful!

After having read a few of your flash fictions, I think you've got a little theme going on with these twist ending :P Very good, as always. I love the descriptions of the snow and ice :)

Debbie D. said...

I didn't see that coming. What a great surprise ending! The way you described winter almost makes me like it. ☺

margirene said...

Great contrast between her imaginings, and the reality of her situation. And what a horrifying idea that cryogenically frozen bodies might still be conscious.

Misha Gerrick said...

Wow that ending was a surprise. Scary thought that cryogenically frozen people could be awake.

Russell said...

Science will probably surpass it and they'll find a more efficient way to preserve specimens. Hell, I can't even listen to my 8 track tapes anymore.

The Happy Whisk said...

Thanks. I hope to. Right now I am taking my formulas and turning them into recipe and method. It's a new kind of writing to me and I'm enjoying it.
