PART OF THE SCENERY

It had always been his dream. Traveling Route 66 was just one of my husband's chosen road trips.

He'd purchased the perfect motor home; it held everything needed for ease during cross-country excursions. Economical, and yet with every creature comfort!

His retirement choice wasn't mine.

I wanted the beach, an endless view, not mindless rutted roads with repeated views of meadows and trees. Or living with strangers and repeated smoke filled nights around campfires listening to the same dull stories and swatting mosquitoes.

Murder will out!

Now I reside here, my ashes trampled under the feet of other Route 66 tourists!

HOPE

I gazed through the walkway, an unassuming path that screamed danger. I ignored the warning. My desire for freedom was like an unquenchable thirst. I would allow nothing to stand in my way.

It was my sixteenth birthday and the exact hour of my birth, the moment when we were given the option to join the cult or take the path to the unknown. Did I have the nerve?

Was it courage to want a life that didn't start with a motherhood before my seventeenth birthday? If I didn't make it through the gauntlet, it meant death.

I chose.

Hope.

HOT DOG!

Just 100 words: can you do it?

Something I don't usually do is continue the story. But this week's word is 'elan' which means energy, style, confidence, panache. I immediately saw the character of Denny, from my last Drabble Promises going confidently about his life despite his blood lust, or maybe because of it.

HOT DOG!
Denny put the dog on the bun and handed it to the officer. "Condiments to your left. Help yourself to the potato salad."
"No. Thank you. This will do. We still haven't located your wife." Officer Demetri said as he added onions and mustard to his hot dog. "You did all this work yourself?" He surveyed the new patio. "Damn lot of concrete."
"The professionals did that. I just watched with a beer in hand." Denny laughed. "Janet left me a 'to do list. I expected her back before I finished. I guess she's having too much fun down under."

This week's word of the week is 'impede'.

Today's Drabble is dedicated to Susan
and is in answer to her comment on the last drabble 'Curses'.

PROMISES

The new patio base had been prepared. Dug out to the perfect level, soil tamped, gravel added, then rebar and wood framing before the cement pour.
Denny wiped the sweat from his brow. Waiting for the cement truck to arrive he surveyed his back yard and smiled. He could envision the fire pit, and family cookouts, just as Janet had designed it.
Kneeling, Denny placed his hand on the gravel pad in an almost caressing way.
I told you I'd have the final word. You made a promise when you vowed to honor and obey. Divorce was never, an option!

Okay, so I'm blogging when I'm supposed to be taking a break.
Honestly, it's impossible to take a complete break
from the computer when you've just released two books.
Murder & Obsession
Parallels: Felix Was Here
I've been trying to stay on top of things and
I've used FB and Twitter to keep the 'momentum' going. LOL
Am I writing? Yes, and this is just a little post.

CURSES

Jessica paced and searched the sky for the lightning promised with each loud explosion of thunder. As the storm intensified in strength so did her anxiety. Her nightly prayers the same, a plea to the gods, please lift this curse and free me from captivity?

Despite the worsening weather, Arnold was on time. Jessica hurried into the kitchen to make sure dinner was ready.

She poured his martini and opened the door to greet him.

Lightning filled the sky and it seemed as though time stood still, but Arnold didn't. The strike threw him into the neighbor's yard.

Curse lifted!

NO PARKING

I told you not to park there!

Calm down. We'll find out where they're towing it too and pay the fine.

So much for hiding our time machine in plain sight. What if someone hits the wrong button?

Quit panicking. I created the remote starter for a reason. All we have to do is lock it down, and no matter what button they hit, nothing will happen. Just hand me the beach bag and I'll make sure.

You mean that cute blue and white number I bought yesterday.

Exactly!

Uh, sorry, but it's on the back seat of the car.

"Blue and white tennis shoes," She whispered, as memories poured forth. "Jeans, light blue shirt."

"Go on."

Jenny sighed but put all her strength into answering. "Red eyes."

"Bloodshot?"

"No. Blood red pupils."

Detective Samples shook his head as he recorded her words. "Tell me about his hair?"

"Shoulder length, black, and wavy." Jenny grimaced.

He knew she was in pain, but he couldn't delay his questions. "Anything else?"

Her eyes widened. Her voice shook. "His fangs were bright white."

Jenny lost consciousness. The machines alarmed.

Detective Samples stepped back as doctors and nurses rushed in.

Fangs? She said fangs!

DOPPELGANGER

Flash Fiction for the Purposeful Practitioner is a weekly writing challenge designed for both the flash fiction newbie and the more experienced writer. It is the desire of this challenge to allow writers the opportunity to clear the cobwebs from a more tedious and involved project. Becoming a part of a new and growing writer’s community might be just what the doctor ordered to rejuvenate your writing juices

The opening sentence for the January 15th Flash Fiction for the Purposeful Practitioner:  ” We were within a mile-and-a-half of the service roads when we found it.”

This challenge is open until 11:00 pm Thursday night, January 21st .

This weekly challenge can now be found on TWITTER and FACEBOOK. Check us out there.

DOPPELGANGER

"We were within a mile-and-a-half of the service roads when we found it."

The birds circling overhead caught our attention. We'd hoped to find the hikers before sunset. We never imagined anything like this.

Eviscerated bodies. The birds and larger animals had already consumed their eyes and carried off most of their organs.

Two young men who went out for a day's hike had met a monster.

We called the police and CSI. Lights lit the scene and a tarp protected the bodies while five men gathered evidence.

At midnight, howls of an animal stopped us cold. The beast attacked. Somehow, I survived.

"Well doctor, is he sane enough to stand trial?"

YELLOW FEATHERS

Welcome to FRIDAY FICTIONEERS hosted by

Join us, just tell a complete story, beginning, middle and end in 100 words or less, based on the photo prompt.

Make every word Count!

PHOTO PROMPT © Luther Siler

YELLOW FEATHERS

"COD?" I asked the coroner while surveying the area. The patio of Sara Palin's home, a well-known and highly controversial politician.

"By the look on her face, I'd say she was scared to death. Most likely heart attack. You knew her; did she have a bad ticker?"

"Not that I'm aware, but she was scared to death of birds. You think that cluster of yellow feathers had anything to do with her death?"

"In subdued light, it's possible, I'll know more after the autopsy, but really murder by Ornithophobia and piñata. Now I can honestly say I've heard it all!"
