COMMITMENT

There's one sad truth in life I've found

While journeying east and west -

The only folks we really wound

Are those we love the best.

We flatter those we scarcely kn
ow,

We please the fleeting guest,

And deal full many a thoughtless blow

To those who love us best.

~Ella Wheeler Wilcox~

This blog is in honor of my two sons who remind me daily the true meaning of love and the commitment I made when they came into my life.

PHARAOH KATIE'S CELEBRATION

REMEMBER MEETING THE PHARAOH
A blog post from May 2013 introducing Katie Hamstead's first book in the Kiya trilogy. I was honored then and I am doubly honored today to help her celebrate the two year anniversary of that book and the completion of her Kiya trilogy.

by

Pharaoh Akhenaten reigned during the 18th Dynasty of Egypt. He is famous for being the "heretic King" because he abandoned the traditional religion for monotheism and worship of a minor god, the Aten. Akhenaten is the Pharaoh which Naomi/Kiya is forced to marry in Kiya: Hope of the Pharaoh.

1. What do people notice first about you?

My appearance. My physical deformities are pronounced, and make people avert their eyes so they do not stare. I sense my wives' disgust with me, even if none of them say it.

2. What one physical attribute would you change?

My long fingers and toes.

3. What are you most afraid of?

Betrayal. As Pharaoh, every day I must keep vigilant for those who would have me dead. Even people closest to me could turn at any moment.

4. What's the most important thing in your life? What do you value most?

The most important thing in my life is my loyal wives and children. I love each of them, but the ones who give me their allegiance in return are my favorites. Loyalty is a rare commodity in a royal household.

5. What is your idea of perfect happiness?

Where everyone is happy, and no one lives in fear. That is my vision, why I built my city, so all could start anew under the wise and gracious Aten.

6. What is your most treasured possession?

Nefertiti and our daughters, but Kiya is also rising in my graces as she holds a strong loyalty to me.

7. What is the quality you most like in a woman?

Loyalty, charm, grace and fertility.

8. What do you most value in your friends?

Again I would say loyalty. I have very few friends as a Pharaoh. Most men wish to use me for my power, and give me their daughters for treaties and trade agreements. Finding loyalty among such circumstances is difficult, so when I find it, I hold it close to my heart.

9. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

My health. Although I am Aten's offspring, my body is weak. I am terribly limited as a result, and sense that I will not live to old age.

* ********** *

Oh yes, Kiya. Make him love you, make him hold you in his highest regard....

Here are Katie's books!

When Naomi’s sisters are snatched up to be taken to be wives of the erratic Pharaoh, Akhenaten, she knows they won’t survive the palace, so she offers herself in their place. The fearsome Commander Horemheb sees her courage, and knows she is exactly what he is looking for…

The Great Queen Nefertiti despises Naomi instantly, and strips her of her Hebrew lineage, including her name, which is changed to Kiya. Kiya allies herself with Horemheb, who pushes her to greatness and encourages her to make the Pharaoh fall in love with her. When Akhenaten declares Kiya will be the mother of his heir, Nefertiti, furious with jealousy, schemes to destroy Kiya.

Kiya must play the deadly game carefully. She is in a silent battle of wills, and a struggle for who will one day inherit the crown. If she does bear an heir, she knows she will need to fight to protect him, as well as herself, from Nefertiti who is out for blood.

Nefertiti has forced Naomi to flee Amarna with Malachi and the three children. But even under the protection of Naomi’s family in Thebes, Nefertiti still hunts her and Tut. Nefertiti sends assassins to kill them, and while Naomi fights to protect the children, Malachi fights to keep her safe.

With three children in tow, one of which isn’t her own, she is labeled the harlot outcast wife of the pharaoh and is shunned. She isn’t safe among her own people, and flees from being stoned to death. Although her family protects her, she must find a way to survive.

While Naomi struggles to keep herself and Tut alive, old adversaries return as Smenkhkare takes advantage of Akhenaten’s ailing health. Naomi must rely on Horemheb’s promise to protect Tut’s birthright, but her feelings for Malachi could cause more problems with Horemheb than she expects.

Tut has grown into his position as Pharaoh, but he is a wild young man. Naomi fears for him, not only because of his recklessness, but because he has put his trust in Ay—the man determined to destroy Naomi—despite her and Horemheb advising against it.

Meanwhile, death and slavery hang over Naomi and her family. With fear of the booming Hebrew numbers causing talk of enslaving them, conscription is reinstated and Naomi fears for the lives of her other children. Especially since Ay's children are now adults, and just as dangerous as their father. They threaten to take Itani, conspire against Tut, and push for power.

But Tut is in trouble. While Ay's daughter draws Horemheb's attention, and Naomi deals with the struggles of her family, everyone's distraction could spell death for the young Pharaoh.

Please stop by and congratulate Katie!

A CHANGE OF MIND

COVER REVEAL

A Change of Mind
and Other Stories

by

Nick Wilford

A Change of Mind and Other Stories consists of a novella, four short stories and one flash fiction piece. This collection puts the extremes of human behaviour under the microscope with the help of lashings of dark humour, and includes four pieces previously published in Writer’s Muse magazine.

In A Change of Mind, Reuben is an office worker so meek and mild he puts up with daily bullying from his boorish male colleagues as if it’s just a normal part of his day. But when a stranger points him in the direction of a surgeon offering a revolutionary new procedure, he can’t pass up the chance to turn his life around.

But this isn’t your average surgeon. For a start, he operates alone in a small room above a mechanic’s. And he promises to alter his patients’ personality so they can be anything they want to be…

In Marissa, a man who is determined to find evidence of his girlfriend’s infidelity ends up wondering if he should have left well alone.

The Dog God finds a chink in the armour of a man with a megalomaniacal desire to take over the world.

In The Insomniac, a man who leads an obsessively regimented lifestyle on one hour’s sleep a night finds a disruption to his routine doesn’t work for him.

Hole In One sees a dedicated golfer achieving a lifelong ambition.

The Loner ends the collection on a note of hope as two family members try to rebuild their lives after they are torn apart by jealousy.

Genre: Contemporary speculative fiction

MYSTERIES FOR MYELOMA

My good friend, Nancy Lynn Jarvis's, is participating in the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation fundraising event this March. Her husband, like Tom Brokaw, has multiple myeloma, a plasma cell cancer. He was diagnosed a little more than two years ago. If he’d developed this disease a decade ago, he’d likely be dead by now, instead he’s doing well. Fortunately great strides have been made and survival times keep getting pushed out because of research, new medicines, and new treatments.

The Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation has been instrumental in fundraising dedicated to finding a cure for the disease. Supporters have answered their call to do creative fundraising.

There’s a cat litter manufacturer who donates a portion of sales as part of a “Cats for Cancer” campaign. Ditto a Louisiana seafood producer who sells “Crayfish for Cancer.”

It seems this group loves alliteration and it occurred to Nancy that as a mystery writer she could donate books for sale and dub them “Mysteries for Myeloma.

Five of Nancy's books are real estate mysteries set in Santa Cruz. Nancy and her husband also edited a terrific cookbook called “Cozy Food: 128 Cozy Mystery Writers Share Their Favorite Recipes” which qualifies in the mystery category because all the recipes are from mystery writers.
This year’s Greater Bay Area MMRF - Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation event is a 5K Walk/Run which will be held in San Francisco at the Marina Green on March 22nd. Nancy will be there selling books. All proceeds will be donated to MMRF. For people with e-readers or those who can’t make the event, profits from e-books purchased on Amazon that day will also be donated.

Nancy's Amazon Author page is http://tinyurl.com/6uq4gsx if you want to take a look at the books or get ready to buy one on March 22nd.

E-books are only $3 or $4 each — such a small donation to make — but if enough people buy one, not only will they get a book they may enjoy reading, but we will raise some real money…perhaps enough to keep Nancy's husband and many others around for those who love them.

“Mags and the AARP Gang,” another book she's written will also be included for those who prefer humor to mysteries or cookbooks.

Please consider spreading the word about this wonderful fundraiser. Email your friends. Post about it on your blog. Tweet and share thru social media. Nancy and many others will be grateful.

DEFYING REASON

Please welcome Elizabeth Seckman, author of Defying Reason. Today she's sharing part of her writing journey with us.

UNIQUE RESEARCH

There is always something in a book that needs researched that a reference book or Google search just doesn't quite cover.

In the first book of the Coulter men series (Past Due), I needed to know if the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse was turned off during its move inland. None of the articles written on the subject mentioned whether or not it glowed, so I called people who lived on the island to get the answer. Which was no, it didn't glow.

For book two in the Coulter men series (Healing Summer), I wanted to know where a traveler could get lunch in one of the tiny half-horse Montana towns. While we vacationed in the region, I would ask cashiers and clerks, and on more than one occasion, someone offered to whip up some food.

For book three in the Coulter men series (Fate Intended), I needed some dirty words translated into Russian, so I hired a translator.

And for the fourth book in the Coulter men series (Defying Reason), I needed to know the rules on phone calls in and out of jail. Fortunately, a single shout out on Facebook had my inbox filled with real life prison contact stories.

For me, one of the funnest parts of writing the story is the unique research required by each one.

The Blurb:

Jo Leigh Harper comes from a long line of trouble-making, white trash stock.
Tanner Coulter comes from a longer line of wealth-creating, blue blood stock.
Jo graduated college top of her class, moving toward a future full of possibilities.
Tanner dropped out of college, trading a law degree for drinking games and one night stands.
A family crisis throws the rich party boy and the poor genius girl together. The attraction is immediate, though neither one is a heart-in-the-sand-drawing believer in true love. But as the summer sun heats up along the shores of the Outer Banks, so does the connection between them. Maybe, just maybe, they can win at love by defying reason.

Author Bio:

Elizabeth is a multi-published author of books for people who are believers in happily-ever- after, true love, and stories with a bit of fun and twists with their plots. The mother of four young men, she tackles laundry daily and is the keeper of the kitchen. She lives along the shores of the Ohio River in West Virginia, but dreams daily of the beach.

BURIED!

This picture is to demonstrate how I've been feeling since my last post regarding the goals I've set for 2015—buried! So maybe my goals were a bit ambitious, but I was sure I could achieve them when I wrote them down, but a month in, I'm no longer as certain.

Still, it's only a month in so I'm blaming the depressive qualities of winter – cloudy gray skies, a frozen dishwasher pipe, a flood on the kitchen floor, the drip, drip, drip of a leak that just wouldn't quit, and then finding out it's been dripping for months maybe years, and the wooden water soaked beams of the floor need to be replaced. Oh the joys of owning a 100 + house!

But there is no quit because each day the sun shines brighter and longer, I can feel the hope of spring. And while the muse has me working despite everything, I'm not yet working on any of the book goals I listed in January, but on the changes for Murder & Obsession suggested by my editor.

The novel I thought I'd finished is still in rewrite, so please excuse me while I concentrate on perfection. Although, I did enter WOW's winter flash fiction challenge, so that is something I can check off the list.

Oh, and once again I'm joining Mari L. McCarthy's

Starting on March 1st.

Okay, I admit it, I need all the help I can get!

I also recently wrote a post for Mari's blog Create Write Now that discusses how journaling helped me rediscover my muse after a year of illness.

What about you, have you achieved the goals you set? Do you journal? How has it affected your writing?
