BAFFLED

I apologize for the grainy photo, but trying to get pictures of active animals isn't easy. They have a habit of running away before the camera is even eye level. Some day I'll have them on webcam, so you can enjoy their antics too. There is one on the ground cleaning up the seeds the birds drop; the other is relaxing on the fence - formulating the next attack. He doesn't like eating off the ground.

As some of you know I'm feeding the birds and fighting the squirrels, who love sunflower seeds. You can't blame them, I love sunflower seeds. But they make little piggies of themselves. So far, and after several 'squirrel proof' feeders I have resorted to the 'squirrel baffle' to dissuade them from their ravenous consumption.

The 'baffle' is the large black umbrella like thing above the feeder; it's slippery, but these guys are big and smart. I'm hoping I've got the right distance between the baffle and the food. These guys will hook their tails around the hook at the top and stretch to reach the seeds. It's amazing, so we'll see...

Tomorrow I will know if I've finally beaten them - funny thing is, I'm betting on the squirrels!

I have a nest of cardinals in my pine tree, but he simply will not pose for a picture, I shall continue to try though, he's beautiful!

Oh, and I know another distraction from writing, do you blame me? The weather has been so beautiful!

I also have a new post on my blog Murderous Imaginings - I hope you check it out and become a follower. I've dedicated that blog to research and information on murder for the writer so inclined.

My bet is on the squirrels too, takes a lot to baffle them. Hope the weather holds and the birds continue to come to your garden.

Going to check out your other post now. I have missed you, and the posts, great to see you back.

Hi Yolanda
What a delightful post. Obviously the animals and birds are loving the weather too. :D

Clever!
If it doesn't work, maybe coating the top of the umbrella with slippery oil will help. Then you can laugh as the squirrels just slide right off.

They sure have a way of getting to it no matter what you do.

Hi Nila, they are smart and can jump great lengths too. I think they'll figure out a way. Thanks for the visits, I have been slow this year. Trying to get back to it, but distractions are keeping me entertained.

Me too probably too much. Someone's got to do the writing too - oops, I think that's me! :)

Great idea! Thanks!

My son wants to do that too, but these guys are like pets - my neighbor raised them from little tiny babies, they're part of the neighborhood. They just make little piggies of themselves. Happy summer to you and yours!

I was wondering what kind of oil would work. I even asked my husband if car wax would be a good idea. :)

So true, they can get around most anything!

LOL - send the squirrels my way. We have them, but they never go near the feeder.

Ah, what's your secret? Honestly, I love the little critters, we sat outside this morning and watched them for almost an hour. So far the baffle is winning!

Hi Yolanda,

Squirrels are sneaky little critters. It seems that so far, so good in your outwitting squirrels.

Beautiful weather is indeed a distraction and also an inspiration for future writing.

Consider your post shared, my kind friend.

Gary :)

Unfortunately, I'm betting on the squirrels, too. Those critters will do just about anything to get to the food.

We watched them for a while today, and they are planning something! It's a great distraction, and I realized today, that the birds and squirrels have stepped in to fill Patches place. It makes me love them all the more!

Thanks for the share, you are a dear, dear friend!

They are cunning, but so fun to watch. Thanks for following both blogs, that's generous!
