One Foggy Halloween

Halloween was a dark and dreary night filled with misting rain and fog that moved like ghostly images around the yellow light of the lampposts. It matched my mood, and I went for a walk despite the weather or the late hour. The world was quiet because all the vamps, witches, and goblins, with bellies full of chocolate, were astral projecting through candy-crush dreams.

As the fog closed in and the shadows moved surreptitiously around me, I relished the feel of solitude and silence. I'd just lost a coveted part in the new GT Dragon series. Smarting from the rejection, I was angry for believing my agent when he used words like star and soon-to-be rich and famous.

Sure, I'd appeared in several videos and commercials, even a slasher film, with a scream that won out over fifteen others. But the truth is I'm just an extra. A girl with good legs, a pretty smile, and an award-winning scream. The problem was that I had no desire to be average.

Visibility was low, but I was too caught up in a blue funk to care. With no destination in mind, I walked around and around, block after block. I wasn't lost, just wandering, trying to figure out how to change the future.

"Excuse me, Miss," a deep voice crashed my pity party. Startled, my hand went to my heart, and my breath caught in my throat. Foolishly, I'd assumed I had the world to myself.

The mist seemed to part, and I spotted an incredibly handsome man under the streetlamp. Deep dark eyes, long dark wavy hair. Black jeans and a leather jacket. The clichéd bad boy.

"Don't tell me, you need directions?" I gave him my best "make my day" attitude.

He moved closer. His eyes were hypnotic, his advance slow and easy, and that smile contagious. "I thought you were lost. You've passed by here twice."

"Not directionally lost, just deep in thought," I said as I tried to recall if I had passed by before.

"I'll buy you a drink if you share your thoughts."

"Sure, why not," I agreed, knowing a crowd was safer.

We crossed the street to the Jumpy Jitters. I knew Jess, the owner. As we walked to the corner booth, I introduced myself.

"I'm Drake. Nice to meet you, Clara," he said, then took my hand in his and kissed the back of my hand. His eyes were mesmerizing, and his touch sent warm tingles through my body. I swallowed air. My whole body flushed.

He chuckled. "I've never seen anyone blush so easily."

I slid into my seat and removed my jacket. "It's too warm in here." Embarrassed and questioning my reaction, I fanned my face. Sure, the guy was handsome, but I've seen plenty of attractive, and no, I've never felt that electric spark with anyone else. It had to be a fluke. Too much static in the air. I changed the subject. "So, what has you hanging out in the fog in a small town like Carlisle on Halloween night?"

Before he could answer, the waitress asked for our order. I ordered a drink I could sip all night, a Black Russian. Mr. Suave ordered a bottle of Jack and a draft. I grinned. "Don't tell me, you're nursing a broken heart?"

"No. The bottle is for my grandmother. She's a spry old lady that likes a nip once in a while. Halloween's her favorite holiday. You should have seen her with the kiddos. They loved her costume and that cackle of hers. Scares them every time."

"That's sweet. You're visiting from where?"

"Chicago. I'm a pilot."

For two hours, we conversed like old friends. When Jess turned the lights up and said, "last call," I felt cheated. Drake was an intriguing man."

Drake offered to walk me home, but I said "no" too quickly. It seemed the safest option. "I'll catch a ride with Jess. He lives near me. It was nice meeting you. I hope we run into one another next time you're in town."

"If it's in my power, we will," he said with a sly smile. "May I kiss you goodnight?"

I blushed again, and he took it as a yes. But damn, that man can kiss. I'd never, ever been kissed so well. An immediate addiction, I wanted more. My heart pounded, and I could barely catch my breath.

Drake wished me sweet dreams, then, too quickly, he was gone. After the last patron left, I asked Jess for a ride home, but he had to do the floors, and I didn't feel like waiting.

Walking out in the night air was a rude awakening. The fog had thickened, but I pulled up my collar and started a quick pace home.

Half an hour later, I realized home was blocks away and in the opposite direction. I was standing on a street where the only visible house still had lit Halloween decorations. The fog gave the scene a macabre look.

"Did you follow me?" Drake's voice broke through the fog of my confusion."

"No, honest. I… oh God, I'm not drunk. I know what street I live on. How did I get here?"

Drake, laughingly, said, "I told you Grandma was a witch?"

"Yes, but…a…real…witch?"

"Is there any other kind?"

I still hadn't spotted him in the fog. "Where are you?"

He put his arms around me from behind and whispered. "Right here, beautiful."

I turned. One look into those alluring eyes, and we were locked in a kiss. The passion was all-consuming, as though we'd been lovers for years. I surrendered completely when he began whisper-soft kisses behind my ear and down my neck. Adrift in the passion of his touch and lost in desires I'd never experienced before, I could have sworn we were floating high above the city.

***

A year later, Drake and I married. He flies jets, I'm still an extra, and Granny's is our favorite Halloween hideout.

For the WEP. You choose - be King or Queen of your own fabulous dream.

This October challenge doesn't need to be scary. Love can also blossom among vampires, witches, or fairies.

Wait until you read my Thriller Story. There's no killing, no torture, nothing gory.

On Wednesday, my WEP story will be told, and all that week, I'm happy to host and read your magnificent posts.

"I Put A Spell On You"

Satan granted my wish. Who knew, a redhead was his preferred dish.

Was it a rival who cursed me? A friend? No, dear love. It was thee!

Sold me to the soul eater, you lousy no good cheater!

You received your money's worth. The vilest of torture on Earth. Flesh eaten slowly, slice by slice.

Especially wide awake, like stripped steak.

I cursed your name, your very existence, but despite it all. I won the Devil's assistance.

Now the curse is yours. To be replayed forever more.

On repeat, oh, what a treat!

I'll do the deed, my revenge fully decreed.

The 7th song for Halloween Party Playlist:

"Don't Fear the Reaper"

Ugly in death. No need for breath. Beauty is only skin deep, so true, but there's no reason to weep.

Yet tears we do cry, for our souls did not fly.

But stayed put, tethered to the Earth, and this monster's berth.

Was that the killer's goal to forever imprison our souls?

Beelzebub hear my vow. My soul is yours, my love, for eternity if only one wish you'll endow.

Give me the beast who cursed me, and yours forever, I'll be.

Your every carnal desire I will transpire.

Please, demon King, for you I will more than sing.

"Welcome To My Nightmare"

 October is finally here

and the fun begins!

 ***

But first, the 6th song for your Halloween Playlist is

"WELCOME TO MY NIGHTMARE" - ALICE COOPER

"WELCOME TO MY NIGHTMARE"

I could never have imagined this. Cursed with barely a kiss.

A writer of horror and mystery, now part of a murderer's history.

How could my books with happy endings not hold the same outcome for me? Instead, I'm buried with others under this gnarled tree.

My killer was charming. Not the least bit alarming.

A fan with questions and a few suggestions.

I blushed like a teen and felt like a queen.

A cocktail with Rohypnol and I was his doll.

So business-like, with his sharp knife.

Death didn't come swift, but when it did it was a gift.

"MAN-EATER"

Isn't she pretty! The man-eater!

Thought you were safe, but the undead began to rise. You passed a cemetery, and now they're after your hide.

How can you beat the walking dead? Beheading? A bullet to the head. Or hiding under the bed.

There is nowhere safe? Not on Earth, not when evil has full reign, and the zombies want your brain.

Maybe you can dress the part? Entertain the man-eater, show her your heart.

I've the perfect tune. After all, it's a full moon.

Get your costume, prepare for fun, or fall victim to the craze. It's only your soul you have to save.

BLACK MAGIC

The Devil doesn't need magic. Do you? Protection from this new Hell on Earth. You only have to survive until November 1st. Then evil returns to its unholy home.

But for thirty-one days, you're exposed. Better find some of that old black magic, but what's the cost? Your firstborn, or are you forever lost?

She'll ask for the harshest. Can you make the sacrifice? Will you pay or take your chances as evil roams? Or sell what's precious to save your unworthy soul?

Better act fast. For this, consuming evil will last until the toll of midnight on October 31st.

There's a "Bad Moon Rising"

I know it's only September, but I'm already excited for the unholy month of haunting, October. So here it is. My ode to the ghosts, goblins, vampires, and witches. Starting today, I'm posting weekly. Each week a new song, because everyone needs a playlist for that Halloween party, and why not a flash to go along with it? After all, it's all about the ghost story, isn't it?

The first song chosen is:

"Bad Moon Rising" by Creedence Clearwater Revival

https://youtu.be/5BmEGm-mraE

Photo by Vino Li on Unsplash

THERE'S A "BAD MOON RISING"

September's here, but something disconcerting is occurring in Hell. There's a disturbance among the denizens below.

Even Satan is dancing to a tune we all know.

Celebrating in Hell, the ghosts and goblins are preparing to appear. Unfortunately, the bad news is that it won't just be on Halloween this year.

When the sun goes down. The world will awaken to an unholy sound. All the demons, gargoyles, and ghosts will arise and take flight. Guard your soul, don't mess around!

Lock your doors tight, for evil has arisen, and no one is safe from diablo's intrusion.

Happy early Halloween!

The WEP Challenge

THRILLER

(follow the link to the lyrics)

A little more inspiration taken directly from the list of Challenges for 2022

This is the Fear fest Challenge in which we ramp up the spook factor over here, welcoming your creepiest compositions, your most haunting and haunted tales running the gamut of paranormal, speculative, crime, and horror genres. However, as always, there are no rigid rules. Feel free to write to any genre if those mentioned are not your thing.

The prompt is based on Thriller, released in the early '80s,  an unofficial anthem for Halloween and horror. Both singer and song are music industry icons. Thriller has sold 70 million+ copies worldwide and Michael Jackson, known as the King of Pop, is one of the controversial and culturally significant figures of the 20th century. They credited him with some landmark music as well as reinventing complex dance moves like the moonwalk to make it his own signature. Just like the Beatles, MJ was, during his lifetime and remains, more than a decade after his death, one of the bestselling artists of all time. He has left a massive and unique thumbprint on the music/entertainment scene of the late twentieth century.

The prompt has endless possibilities. Take the lyrics to this song - they can inspire myriad flashes - the forty thousand years of funk, the beast about to strike, the thing with forty eyes - the imagery is vivid and specific, and boy! Can they be used to craft a creepy tale or what? Or you could use the video's own storyline to write to. Use that iconic dance with the undead MC morphing into a zombie, to spin a horror flash.

Or maybe not...because hang on...not everyone needs to be a horror/Halloween junkie. Use the demons as a metaphor. Let the dance with the zombies become an inner wrestling bout with some tragic character flaw(s) in your MC. Or weave a girl-boy-movie-night narrative. Or one of a rescue mission where the hero snatches the damsel in distress from the jaws of monsters real or imaginary.  Or...just write to the title 'Thriller' - no end to the tales you could tell. You see? - a million ways to go, a million things to be!
