Top Ten Literary Detectives

My Top Ten Literary Detectives

When I was younger, I read daily. My mother hated to find me with my nose in a book. She’d stand right over me and yell, and I wouldn’t hear a thing. I was lost in the story -- a new world. Reading was my escape.

I credit my fourth-grade teacher with my love for books because she introduced me to the library and the gift of a library card. Before that, though, I’d read newspapers and magazines: anything and everything I came across. My older brother had a collection of science fiction paperbacks, and Ray Bradbury was a favorite. In other words, I read everything in sight. Even now, I consume words at an amazing speed.

Today, my ability to escape to other worlds, other times, and other lives is still a gift of peace.

My top ten literary detectives are listed below in no particular order: Seriously, how do you choose a favorite?

Please note - I did choose some by their TV/Movie persona. It matched perfectly to the character I saw. Even though the book came first.

1.       Nancy Drew --- Created by Carolyn Keene

2.       Judy Bolton --- Created by Margaret Sutton

3.       Mike Hammer --- Created by Mickey Spillane

4.       Hercule Poirot --- Created by Agatha Christie

5.       Nick & Nora Charles --- Created by Dashiell Hammett

6.       Miss Marple --- Created by Agatha Christie

7.       Sherlock Holmes & Watson --- Created by -Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

8.       C. Auguste Dupin --- Created by Edgar Allan Poe

9.       Eve Dallas --- Created by J D Robb

Reading was the very best gift I was ever given. It is still an education, comfort and escape.
I never warmed to Hercules Poirot, and preferrred Miss Marple. I liked Ngaio Marsh and Margery Allingham's murder mysteries better than Agatha Christie (though her autobiography was much better than Ngaio Marshes.
I am a fan of Lsurie King's series featuring Sherlock Holmes and partner Mary too.

Hi Renee- love the detective novels ... and definitely read loads early in life - and enjoy watching them now. Maigret by Georges Simenon, Father Brown by GK Chesterton, The Third Man - Graham Greene ... and actually lots of others ... but we're lucky to have so many to chose from. As EC mentions I enjoyed Ngaio Marsh back in the day ... good luck with the tour ... and all the best Hilary

Sherlock Holmes tops my list.

I've always loved to read too. Nancy Drew was one of my favorites too as a kid. I'm watching the TV series and re-reading a few of her books now.

I got my love of detective stories from my mother. She read a lot and Earle Stanley Gardner's Perry Mason was one that she collected. Even though he wasn't a detective, it was a favorite of mine. Nowdays Eve Dallas is a favorite of mine, but I still enjoy the Nick and Nora stories.

I was in love when I first got a library card. Heaven, that's what the library meant to me . I'll have to look up Ngaio Marsh, Margery Allingham, and Lsurie King. I know my vocabulary can be directly associated to the books I've read. It makes me laugh, because you can so easily tell that the head of our country has never read anything his entire life. He has the most limited vocabulary of anyone I've ever heard speak!

I'm not sure I liked the Nancy Drew series. Still undecided. Maybe a bit too modern. LOL Thanks for stopping by Natalie!

I read all of the Nancy Drew books when I was a girl and I still have them - they are original editions and probably worth some money.
