IWSG - Stressors

Founded by

Question - What's harder for you to come up with, book titles or character names?

The first book had six different titles until I decided. That stress began to taper off with each book. Now it’s become much more straightforward.

For secondary character names, I generally use family, but for the main characters, I stress. I want the name to fit the characteristics and to paint an instant picture of the person. So yes, after 5 novels it’s still a stressor

Thanks for visiting, what stresses you when writing?

The awesome co-hosts are Beverly Stowe McClure, Tyrean Martinson, Tonja Drecker, and Ellen @ The Cynical Sailor! Be sure to stop by and say hello.

I hear you about the first one being the hardest to nail down. There's so much pressure on a first book!

I was good with the first one. It was those that followed that messed me up.

For me as I write Middle Grade novels and do a lot of world building, its the name of the objects, creatures and other stuff that stresses me out. The titles and character names are easy.

Finding appropriate names for my characters is hard, so hard that I'll probably finish my first draft with placeholder names.

I think character names are the bigger stressor for me too. For some reason last names are the worst for me! I hate coming up with them.

Six different titles? That would've been hard to narrow down to the lucky one, but you choose well. :)

Most of my main characters' names came from the Bible.

I've used name generators and baby name websites to find the right name for a character. Some do pop into my head. Of course, with two of my upcoming works, I know the title but not a single character's name.

Hi Yolanda - I think I'd struggle with names ... but sometimes struggle with titles for my blog post - and have trouble thinking of what to write ... 'unravelled' comes to mind! Cheers and good luck with your writing - Hilary

I use family names and I like to tuck bit parts into my stories that have the names of my crit partners. They get a big kick out of it. I even wound up in one of Nan Marino's stories as a flower seller. Just part of the game writers play, I guess. I'm signing up for WEP again. I hope I can come through. I'd like to.

I have used my own name in a book lol so I'm not above family names either. I tend to switch and use middle names and maiden names and such.

Names are way easier for me than titles. I still haven't figured it out for this manuscript.

I have no trouble choosing character names, but titles are a bit trickier, since my story keeps modifying itself, LOL. Writing doesn't stress me, except when I can't find enough time to hide in my den and create.

Hope you're well...:-)

Titles can be really tricky. Took me three tries to figure out my current WIP's.
