One of my favorite characters in Murder & Obsession is Sky Quinn. An Inuit, better known by most as an Eskimo. Sky, is Steven's Uncle, in name only. He was a friend of Steven's Uncle Atian, and had a huge part in training Steven for wilderness survival. (I chose not to use the term Eskimo because some find it derogatory.)
This photo was my inspiration for Sky Quinn.
Murder & Obsession
Excerpt:
A warrior with the heart of Santa Claus, Sky Quinn epitomized the man Steven desired to be. A tracker and guide of unmatched skill, Quinn stood five foot seven, wiry, with weather worn, russet skin, deep brown eyes, and a constitution that kept him forever young. Quinn’s unparalleled courage made him Steven’s hero.
“No one gives up The Ghost of the North Slope, but you they’ll sell out in a heartbeat," Quinn said with a grin.
Despite his pain, Steven smiled. Quinn’s nickname, The Ghost of the North Slope, fit the man. Sky Quinn had a legendary reputation. No man, enemy or friend would ever speak ill of Quinn. He had earned the respect, but Steven hadn’t yet reached mythical status.

Sky Quinn sounds like a good guy.

Hi, Sophie, he's one of my favorites. I'm considering a book about his life too.
DeleteThat note about "Eskimo" being offensive is interesting. It reminds me about when I heard that "squaw" could be offensive as well. You have to be careful these days.
ReplyDeleteI can see why. I know folks call it PC, but in certain cases, I believe it's important. Why push a stereotype? Why denigrate a race for use of a word?
DeleteI do love Sky too. I'm at 72% and thoroughly enjoying your novel. I love the way all your characters are so well-developed, even the pretentious ones :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Nicola, I know everything about each one of them. They are great friends, even the pretentious ones. :)
DeleteSounds like quiet the guy as the arctic winds do fly.
ReplyDeleteExactly! Hi, Pat!
DeleteThere seems to be some difference opinion about where that word, Eskimo, originated. Interesting. I'm also interested in a man who has the title of Ghost of the Northern Slope.
ReplyDeleteHi, Lee, I found that interesting to. Quinn's everywhere and yet you'll never know it until it's too late, or right on time. :)
DeleteSky Quinn sounds like a great guy to have around in a crisis! By that I mean the type of crisis Stephen is going through, not the Q-crisis most of us are facing (and triumphing over) today :) Well he's good for the Q-crisis as well, how cool is that?! :D
ReplyDeleteSo true, Nila. The North Slope is his territory. Steven is very lucky!
DeleteI was watching an episode of a period (1890s) detective show on PBS called The Artful Detective recently that featured an Intuit character. It was about solving the death of an Arctic explorer. I think they were riffing on the story of the Polaris expedition. Anyway - the Inuit character stole the show.
ReplyDeleteI've seen The Artful Detective, I missed that episode. Now I'll have to look for it on Netflix. :) Thanks, Lissa!
DeleteSky is a great name. Indigenous characters offer great opportunities to portray an individual for the reader that will open up a whole new world of which she or he was previously unaware.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Roland. Sky is one of my favorite. I was privileged to meet many great people in Alaska, I had to sneak them into the story too! :)
DeleteYes, I do look forward to getting to book three. At the moment, I am diving into book one. I like the fact that you considered the feelings of others when you named your characters. By that, I mean using the term Inuit instead of Eskimo. I believe you will gain readers for your consideration.

Hi, Pat. I'm thrilled that you're enjoying the books. I discovered that fact while doing my research. Not using it only made sense. Thanks!
DeleteI apologize for being away a few days. I was in New York on vacation.
ReplyDeleteQuinn is a nice name. It's the middle name I gave my son. His mother had first dips on the first name.
NY and a vacation. Did you go to a Broadway show? I hope it was a lovely time. Me, I'm just behind. Too many outside appointments. More time on the road than anticipated. :)
DeleteNothing as glorious as New York city. I was in Rochester and we took one day to go visit Niagara Falls. It was a great time.
DeleteWhat an intriguer character! I think I signed up for the Thunderclap.
ReplyDeleteYes, you did thank you. Would you like a copy of MM&L?
DeleteThanks, everyone! I've had one hell of a day! Been gone more than here, yesterday and today, so while I've answered all the comments thus far, I will be around to visit tonight! Thanks, for your patience, and all your wonderful comments. It's what makes the A to Z such fun! Hey, someone said we only have 9 days left! Celebration time, well, almost! I'll bring the chocolate! :)
ReplyDeleteMany cultures do not like to be lumped under one umbrella name. I understand that. The Inuit are a hardy people in general. My father-in-law met a few of them when he worked on the DEW line (an early warning system) and was treated well. He had a few very nice carvings - small but beautiful - they were given to him on his departure. I think this character sound like a great addition to your novel.
ReplyDeleteThanks, D.G. you're right, amazing people!
DeleteGreat name! Love this excerpt and the description of Sky. Yeah, I totally need to reach that kind of 'mythical status' one day, haha.

I know what you mean, cool, huh!
DeleteI love your description of Sky! Great name and I felt like I knew him ;D
ReplyDeleteI feel like I know him too!
DeleteI had no idea that Eskimo is regarded as a derogatory term.
ReplyDeleteI think it's a charming word. To my understanding, it has a cute connotation, not a negative one, for example, the ice-cream Eskimo Pie...

Until I did my research, I wasn't either.
DeleteWhat a great name for a character. Love it.
ReplyDeleteAll signed up for the Thunderclap. Good luck with it!
Thanks, Julie!
DeleteBased on the comments, it looks like you're killing it with this year's A/Z.
ReplyDeleteVery cool.
Thanks, Ivy!
DeleteGreat name for a character and I love the description "warrior with the heart of Santa Claus".
ReplyDeleteThanks, Debbie!
