BOOKS ON AUDIO

Memories of Murder
Detective Quaid Mysteries Series
Book 2
Audible Audio Edition

Decades ago, the seeds were planted. Today, dark, fathomless eyes rake the image before him.

One final task, and the transformation is complete. Steady fingers screw intricately carved horns on each side of a stiff brow, and a gargoyle suitable for Notre Dame scowls from the smoky mirror in satisfaction. A jagged smile rips through his smooth, hairless face, and inked, reptilian scales caress his naked body. A laugh of hideous resonance emanates from his gut as the demons of hell welcome Lucifer into their fold.

In a dungeon-like chamber, his Lilith awaits. The kidnapped daughter of a nun, groomed to fit the final piece in the complex puzzle for world domination. Will Lucifer marry his bride, on the summer solstice?

Only two things stand in his way: his greed and Detective Steven Quaid.

AN AUDIO VERSION OF MURDER

BLACK WIDOW FLEES SEATTLE

Sarah Palmer becomes Chairman of the Board as investigations into her husband's death continue.

(UPDATE NEWS – September 21, 20XX) Sarah Palmer, the widow of Michael Palmer, has taken on the role of Chairman of the Board for the Palmer Corporation, one year after the death of her husband. The company, which her husband built from a one-room storefront to a multi-million dollar business resource company, has flourished under the guidance of the former corporate attorney and his best friend, Gerald Kessler. Mrs. Palmer, a graduate of the University of Washington, recently moved back to her hometown of Anchorage, Alaska. Is it possible this talented artist is getting away with murder?

Despite labeling Michael Palmer’s death an accident, official sources have reported that there is an ongoing investigation into the unusual circumstances. Netta Greenwald, Michael Palmer’s aunt, has also hired private investigators to look into her nephew’s death. Mrs. Greenwald claims Michael Palmer wanted to end his marriage, a plan he shared with her just a week before his death.

Thrown clear of the Porsche 918 Spyder, Michael Palmer died of a broken neck when his vehicle careened off the road and into a stand of trees. His young wife, Sarah Davis, had generously presented him with the Spyder after his thirty-eighth birthday luncheon at the Herbfarm Restaurant in Woodinville, Washington.

Estimated speeds were as high as 90 mph, as Palmer broke in his gift, but speed was only a contributing factor. To avoid children exiting a school bus, he swerved off the road, at which point, the vehicle hit a tree and was engulfed in flames.

While experts believe the car’s brakes had malfunctioned, the fire destroyed any evidence of tampering. The question remains: how could a brand new Porsche, just delivered from the showroom floor, not have working brakes? Various local media outlets suspect Mrs. Palmer of foul play, labeling her a black widow seeking full control of her late husband’s millions, as well as the corporation.

Will these questions ever be answered, and justice found for the young entrepreneur? Will Sarah Palmer ever be free of the black widow label? Police Detective Terry O'Conner, believes that the evidence is out there and that while the case has gone cold, secrets never stay secrets forever.

FREE! MURDER, MADNESS & LOVE

An opportunity for all readers!

HOW COOL IS THAT?!

MURDER, MADNESS & LOVE
MEMORIES OF MURDER
MURDER & OBSESSION

Light is a fleeting moment in the frozen north that is Alaska. Although the sun shines brightly during the Summer Solstice, Detective Steven Quaid struggles to hold on to what he holds dear during life's darkest moments, his love for family, and professional achievement. Will a murderous stalker, a self-proclaimed Lucifer resurrected, or insidious obsession prove more powerful than this dedicated detective? Three separate life-threatening situations. One determined man.

Detective Steven Quaid is the Anchorage Police Department's top investigator. When he's called in to protect a beautiful widow from a stalker, he's not entirely sure she isn't behind the scheme herself. Before long, Sarah has him wound up tighter than barbed wire.

But one of the police department's best and brightest detectives may just be in over his head, especially when the facts start pointing to a conclusion he isn't willing to face. With a killer on the loose and a climbing body count, Steven can't afford to hedge his bets—or his life.

Is Sarah a victim or a very skilled manipulator?

Catching Alaska’s most notorious serial killer as a rookie made Detective Steven Quaid a hero, but falling in love with a victim from his last case tarnishes that status.

While attempting to repair both his personal and professional life, he stumbles upon an unusual case–and an even more extraordinary foe: a man who believes he is Lucifer. An insidious man who delivers Quaid the ultimate choice: save his fiancée from an assassin’s bullet or stop the sacrifice of a young girl.

Love is never easy, but for Detective Steve Quaid and his fiancée,  their road to happiness is laden with minefields.

After spending countless hours reconverting his grandfather’s cabin into the perfect honeymoon retreat for his bride, the cabin becomes a bloody crime scene detailing her death. Accused, Steven escapes into the Alaskan mountains, biding his time to find the truth.

Who killed his beloved?

A seasoned woodsman, he outsmarts even the cleverest of trackers. All but one.

Mauled by a grizzly, a half-dead Steven barely escapes.

But will he live to bring the rightful murderer to Justice?

C - COLDFOOT

IS FOR COLDFOOT

Known as the world furthest north truck stop, Coldfoot, Alaska, sits on the Dalton Highway, or Haul Road, as most viewers of the television show Ice Road Truckers know it. 254 miles from Fairbanks and 240 miles from Deadhorse or Prudhoe Bay, Coldfoot is the last stop for fuel, food, or accommodations.

"The town was originally a mining camp named Slate Creek, and around 1900 got its present name when prospectors going up the nearby Middle Fork Koyukuk River would get "cold feet" and turn around." Wikipedia.

Coldfoot has the supplies needed to continue the journey north for trucks and other vehicles but it also has an airport. All which figure highly in my novel Murder & Obsession.

Murder & Obsession
Excerpt:

Steven finally reached Coldfoot, and spoke with Sarah before moving too deeply into the mountains.
“Saturday is just too far away.” She sounded wistful.
His pride swelled with her words, but her pensiveness bothered him. “Is something wrong?”
“It’s just… I don’t want to go on this trip. I’m sorry. I’m being foolish. I wish we’d waited, or stopped in Seattle before we flew home.”
“Don’t go; let your attorney handle the business issues. Join me. We can start the honeymoon now.”
She laughed. “Oh, my gosh, we do sound like lovesick teenagers. No, I’ll go to Seattle and take care of business. You have a right to some time alone to make your decision. Just promise me that we won’t be apart again for a long, long time.
I’ve taken her away from home again. “I’m sorry, Sarah, we should’ve
“No, Steven. We both know our responsibilities; besides, I’m the one who insisted on a wilderness honeymoon. I’m just being silly.”
They talked for an hour because he had a hard time saying goodbye. After the phone call, a cold wind took his attention skyward, where the warnings of a storm floated above the horizon, and its foretelling gave him a chill he could not shake.

B - BIG LAKE

IS FOR BIG LAKE

The community of Big Lake is located on the shore of its namesake lake about 60 miles from Anchorage. Big Lake is famous for its recreational opportunities, such as swimming, fishing, and camping to name a few.

Views of Mount Susitna, Denali, and the Talkeetna Mountains makes this resort town a favorite spot summer or winter.

I spent time in Big Lake when I lived in Alaska, and couldn't resist using it in my novel Murder & Obsession. It's a prime location for a surreptitious meeting.

Murder & Obsession
Excerpt:
A mixture of cherry, cerise, and mauve colors filled the sky, and Big Lake mirrored the hues, adding depth and shadow through small ripples across its otherwise glassy surface. The sunset exemplified one of the most striking John had ever seen, and he took a few moments to enjoy the beauty before his meeting.
Inside the entry, he discovered a note. “Make yourself comfortable. Be right back, went to town for groceries.” John checked the time. This doesn’t feel right.
John scrutinized the big room while he pretended to fuss with the bags. Gun at the ready, he continued his surveillance, looking to the loft for intruders. He listened but only heard the crackle of the fire in the huge fireplace across the room, the tick tock of a cuckoo clock above his head, and his own heartbeat. He slowly took off his jacket, just to give Eddie time to get in position and make contact with Brent. John placed his jacket on a hook and entered the living room, his gun hidden at his side. He took in his surrounding, but in the center of the room, his peripheral vision picked up a person sitting by the fire, in a chair not viewable from the door. He immediately honed in on the stranger.
                                                 *****

Yes, I snapped these pictures of Big Lake. Just to prove to all those that thought Alaska was an iceberg, that in the summer the temperatures are warm and the entertainment, the same as most states. The man in the white suit was the Finance Director of the Native organization where I worked as an accountant.
Manohar Nevaskar, a genius financial executive, hired from India. I learned so much from this man!

A - ANAKTUVUK PASS

A IS FOR ANAKTUVUK PASS

"Anaktuvuk Pass (Uhn-uk-too-vuk) was named after the Anaktuvik River. Anaktuvuk is the English way of spelling annaqtugvik place of caribou droppings in Inupiaq, the language of the Inupiat." Wikipedia

While Alaska attracts people seeking adventure, it also attracts those who need a place to hide. The wilderness is a great place to lose oneself, and to lose those in pursuit. Just as one criminal does in my latest release Murder & Obsession! Detective Quaid, with the help of his uncle, tracks the culprit to Anaktuvuk Pass.

A beautiful place, Alaska, but a dangerous place too!

Murder & Obsession

Excerpt:

Anaktuvuk Pass, just north of the Brooks Ranges, was a remote village of Nunamiut Eskimos. Flying in during October, early November meant below zero temperatures, a frozen tundra, and few places to hide. Steven knew if Gayln Southwick was there, ferreting him out would not be hard.

. . . Steven crossed the room in two strides. His hand clamped around Gayln’s neck. "Remember me?"

Grasping at Steven’s hand, Gayln struggled for air and words. Steven threw him against the door. Gayln’s head bounced with a sickening thud. “Going somewhere, Gayln?”

Gayln tried, but couldn’t move his head. “No,” he croaked.

“No, you aren’t, unless it’s a quick trip to meet your maker. You want that, Gayln? Are you ready?”

Gayln nodded, then immediately shook his head.

“Give me a reason. Please, just one little reason. You've no idea the rage I’m holding. What-Have-You-Done?”

Gayln moaned. His face turned an odd shade of blue, his eyes bulged.

“Are you going to talk or do I have to show you the entrance to Hell first?”

Gayln's face was almost purple. “I’ll talk,” he gasped.

MY MAGIC MIKE!

I've written millions of words and now have 2 published books and a 3rd on the way, Murder & Obsession. But an odd thing happened on the way to publication, I'm suddenly stumped even wordless—innovation is gone because my publisher has asked for a tagline and blurb.

They want me to turn a 140,000-word manuscript into one or two sentences, and then entice the reader in 100 words or less with a blurb. I go blank.

I panic; well I did until I met Michael Di Gesú, creative genius and my own personal Magic Man! Sorry, Channing Tatum, but Michael Di Gesú was the 'Magic Man' long before you claimed the title!

To show you the process we go through I'm showing my originals and Michael's response, and how, after just a few emails we came up with perfection!

My original tagline was:

One man's obsession will create every possible obstacle for an ill-fated couple.

Michael said.
"This can use a bit of punching up…."

Flames burn between a hardboiled cop and an aspiring artist but soon extinguish as another man’s obsession ignites into a towering inferno, destroying the couple’s happiness.

I countered with:

Flames burn between a hardboiled cop and a gifted artist but soon extinguish as another man’s obsession ignites into a towering inferno of desire that drives him to destroy the object of his madness.

Michael responded with:
Flames burn between a hardboiled cop and a gifted artist but soon extinguish as another man’s obsession ignites into a towering inferno of desire, driving him to destroy the object of his madness…Sarah.
RESULT:
Flames burn between a hardboiled cop and a gifted artist, but soon extinguish as another man’s obsession ignites into an inferno of desire, driving him to destroy the object of his madness.

*****
My original blurb was:
The road to marital bliss is never easy, but for Detective Quaid and his fiancée, Sarah Davis the path down the aisle to the altar is a minefield.
His grandfather's cabin was to be their honeymoon retreat; instead, it becomes a crime scene. Running from incarceration was supposed to help Steven find answers, but while he fooled the trackers, he couldn't outsmart the ultimate predator. Not once the grizzly had his scent.
Mauled, shot, and no longer a cop, can Steven Quaid bring the actual culprit to justice?
Michael's suggestion was:

Love is never easy, but for Detective Steve Quaid and his fiancée, Sarah, their road to happiness is laden with minefields.
Steve’s countless hours reconverting his grandfather’s cabin into the perfect honeymoon nest for Sarah soon becomes the bloody crime scene for her death. Distraught, Steve is accused and escapes into the Alaskan mountains, biding his time to find the truth…
Who killed his beloved?
A seasoned woodsman, he outsmarts even the cleverest of trackers. All but one…
Mauled by a grizzly, he barely escapes.
But will he live to bring the true murderer to Justice?

My response after the fewest of changes was:
I knew you could take my meanderings and create magic! Thank you!

RESULT:

Love is never easy, but for Detective Steve Quaid and his fiancée, Sarah, their road to happiness is laden with minefields.

If you've finished your masterpiece and suddenly feel intimidated
because you just can't whittle it down to a few words – contact
and create perfection with a true artist.
