FRIED CHICKEN

It's Monday and time some flash fiction fun. Thanks to Barbara W. Beacham and her weekly challenge. Just 100 - 150 words, the photograph and the first sentence as your inspiration.

Today's finish the story begins with:  “As her mount shifted uneasily under her, she grasped the brim of her old felt Stetson, gazed upwards and remembered Jean Pierre.”

FRIED CHICKEN

“As her mount shifted uneasily under her, she grasped the brim of her old felt Stetson, gazed upwards, and remembered Jean Pierre's promise.”

She'd made it, one day and four hours past their agreed upon rendezvous. Did he not wait?

Shaking off doubts, she slid from the saddle to the ground and walked her steed to the creek for a drink. Her eyes darting left then right as the search for her lover continued. Tying the stallion under shade with plenty of green grass, she removed her dusty cloak, washed the dirt from her hands and face, and then combed out her braided hair. Satisfied with her appearance and determined to keep busy while she waited, she laid out the blanket and unpacked the picnic basket.

Convinced Jean would never fail her, even as she had failed him, by almost two days, she opened the wine to breathe.

Jean watched from his hiding place, not sure if he should be angry at her lateness or thrilled that she'd remembered fried chicken.

CONSEQUENCES

It's Monday and time for a little fun. Thanks to Barbara W. Beacham and her weekly flash fiction challenge. Just 100 - 150 words, the photograph and the first sentence as your inspiration.
"The cemetery spread along the area known as Devils Abode."

CONSEQUENCES

“The cemetery spread along the area known as Devils Abode.”

Under a full moon on All Hallows Eve in the Devil's Abode, we vowed our eternal love.

His body strong, athletic, and golden brown like the sand at midday when the sun paints the earth with its most potent rays.

His voice was deep and reassuring, his kisses soft and alluring, so warm and electrifying, deep and demanding. Conquered by desire, I surrendered all to the man I loved.

How was I to know that Jimmy was the devil in disguise? Or that losing my virginity that night would raise the demons of hell?

For God's sake, stop blaming me for the world's ills! I was only sixteen!

A FUTURE

Lu stared at the photograph but vaguely recalled the fair and the day his family donned the clothes that would take them back into the past. The picture was a prized memento from his mother. She loved history and marveled the way her ancestors thrived before the technological revolution.
On her deathbed, she'd given him the picture and told him, "Ignorance and greed are killing the earth. Save your children, you have the knowledge."
"But the others?"
"They won't listen; act before it's too late."
She'd been right. While the population had their noses in a virtual world, the earth began to die. Ignorance and apathy led to an apocalypse that killed 90% of the population.
Lu stared out the porthole as the universe opened before him. He smiled. The family had no idea that little Luigi would grow up to be the captain of the only spacecraft to leave Earth before the planet imploded, but he believed his mother always knew.

I'M SORRY

“I see absolutely everything.”
Including how brilliantly she maintains the household. The children are delightful, although against her orders they feed me several times a week more than necessary. I love their conspiratorial giggles. He's high-strung, angry, and impatient. The atmosphere changes when he's home. The children go silent. She's robotic and accommodating.
The front door slammed and the water heaved like an ocean wave. She scurried to greet him anxious and questioning. Her concern met the back of his hand.
"I told you, no bikes in the driveway."
The children watch wide-eyed from the stair rail. She picks herself up, utters, "I'm sorry."
His fist knocks out a few of her teeth and slices his knuckles. He curses, then kicks her, not once, not twice, but three times.
I witness firsthand the terror, tears, and guilt in the children's eyes.
When the police arrive, he still has his hands around her neck.

BATSHIT CRAZY

“The team employed the use of Nightshade to get the information they wanted from their captive.”

"She guaranteed the truth serum would work."

"You're batshit crazy. I'm just glad he agreed to dinner and you didn't have to kidnap the man, but he's asleep. How the hell can you ask a sleeping man questions?"

"She warned me and told me what to do just in case." Claire took the bucket of ice holding the champagne bottle and threw it over the sleeping man.

He coughed himself awake. "What the f…? Claire? What the hell's going on?"

"You passed out, are you all right?"

"I'm fine. Were their ice cubes in that water?"

"Sorry, I just reacted," she nodded to her companion who left through the back door.

"Jerry, can I ask a question?"

"Sure, just throw me a towel."

Claire tossed the towel and asked her long awaited question.

"Jerry, as the top agent in New York, honestly, what did you really think of my book?"

POTIONS & SPELLS

“He thought he found the perfect hiding spot.”

Rufus watched from safety as Hazel went on a real tear. Potions went flying; even the flames under the caldron pulled themselves into a tight ball to avoid her wrath. But nothing she did could bring her favorite snack back into being.

Hazel could not be consoled. She even tried to create her own version, but her yellow cakes all tasted like dirt and the cream became so hard it broke the only tooth she had left.

Ranting and raving for days with no respite, Rufus waited for her to retire, and tried his own spell. After adding tail of newt, frog's eyes, and a little three spice to his concoction, Rufus knew he had the perfect potion to make Hazel the Twinkie baker she so desired to be.

Rufus was wrong; his potion turned Hazel into her favorite snack.

Rufus wasn't sad, Twinkies, he'd been told would last forever.

REANIMATION

"The petroglyphs told the story of an unusual event.

An event being replayed despite its absolute absurdity!

The sky burned with colors that covered the spectrum, and as I watched darkness fall, I thought of family. Would I ever see them again? I walked back into the cave and my spot on the cold stone floor, thankful for the two by five mat and the safety of granite walls. I wondered how long we would survive before cannibalism became our only option. A spring provided the needed water, but our supply of MREs would only last so long.

I stared at the petroglyphs. They told of the first encounter with the alien worm-like creatures and their defeat by the natives. However, scientists had discovered live cells and had reanimated the creature as a military weapon. Meant to devour the enemy's army, they did not discriminate and swallowed entire populations.

My family, were they gone or hiding like me?
