LOST & FOUND - JEWEL

I hope you've all had a wonderful holiday and are excited to start the New Year! To begin my blogging year I wrote a new piece of flash fiction. Enjoy!

JEWEL
I love her. She loved him. Now she's grieving and blames me. I've waited a lifetime for her, but she'll never forgive me.

Why?

I loaned her husband my plane.

He was a pilot; he shouldn't have taken off in that weather.

Agreed, but I've seen the accusation in her eyes.

How long have you known her?

Since time began.

A romantic, are we?

I'm so glad you're amused.

Sorry, I've never seen you so serious. So what's the story?

I met her ten years ago.

Ah, the girl who got away.

I knew her brother, but the first time I saw her was across a crowded room.

Cliché.

Quit laughing, it's true. Perfection in a maroon blouse. It draped across perfectly shaped breasts like liquid silk. Luscious. Hair the color of the sun through honey, thick and long, softly curled and down to her waist. Her eyes were the color of a spring forest that brightened when she smiled. Her smile warmed me, taunted me, tempted me, and thrilled me.

Our eyes met, and all evidence of a twelve-hour workday was gone, she was my life force, and I hadn't even met her yet. Her brother had told me a little about her, but he'd also warned me - hands off.

Did you keep your hands off?

Yes, I honored my promise to him. God, what a struggle. I was drawn to her. I attended every social function she did. I visited her brother more often. Jewel was my reason for getting up each day. I loved her, needed her, and wanted her like I've never wanted another. To be honest, my sex life was and is thrilling. Each woman I bed, I do so with her in mind. She's my aphrodisiac, my fantasy, my muse. It isn't enough. I want more. I want it all! I always have.

But she met Paul.

Does she know how you feel?

No, I've always just been a friend. Someone she could count on. The jokester with a heart of gold.

Are you giving up?

Never!

Love can be a many splendored thing, a reason for murder if unrequited or for some, a lifelong desire. Love can be all you want, always on your mind, or crazy – as some love songs claim, but in February, a new blog hop is happening.

Lost & Found: Valentine Edition

Another good story. I wonder what will happen. You should do well in those blogfests coming up.

Happy New Year by the way.

Love the dialogue format! Great story... I feel for our guy. I doubt Jewel will forgive him... I know I'd have a very, very hard time letting go of the blame for killing the love of my life—especially once I found out, if I ever did, that this guy had harbored feelings for me since way before. Even if I considered him incapable of outright murder or even manslaughter, I couldn't help feeling that for him my tragedy was a blessing, and that would be a very, very difficult thing to overcome in terms of connecting emotionally. Reminds me a little of the last part of LOVE IN THE TIME OF CHOLERA... Which is to say, GREAT story :)

So happy you're part of the Lost & Found 'fest, Yolanda! I'm very much looking forward to sharing this with you :) What a way for the new year to take off, eh? Happy 2016!

Maybe when the pain isn't so strong she'll see him.

Aw. I'm glad he's not going to give up. This reminded me of my luck in the past with love. I hope things work out for him.

Magnificent story, Yolanda. :-) And as usual, one of your fabulous endings. "Since time began." SO GOOD!
I have a poem in mind for the blog hop. When I read that part, I thought, "oh no. Not this one." By the time I started typing, I had made my mind up to do the deed with a poem. *snort* Dang. You're good at convincing folks. :-) Happy New Year. (BTW, you are quite the poet. I'm impressed. Some brilliant words in your book. xoxo

Hi Jo, thanks, I love these challenges, as you know. Thanks for the vote of confidence! Hope your Holiday and New Year celebration was fabulous! As far as a solution - I haven't decided.

Yolanda Renée said...

Hey Pat, you know me well, I always like the not good things happening. Apparently, happy endings are boring, and did most of those last month for the holidays. :)
Hope your cats are finally coming around, I'm sure they won't hold their grudge for too long. You do control the food!

Yolanda Renée said...

Thanks Lee, I'm sure I will. Funny how a picture can feed your imagination. I saw here and imagined the two men in conversation.

Yolanda Renée said...

I agree, he gives me the creeps. But that's where dark obsessions stem from.
So glad to be part of the Lost & Found. It's what February is all about and I love the stories that come from it.
Hope you sell thousands of books this year!

Yolanda Renée said...

Hi Alex, I'm not sure it's a good idea, but he could play off her grief to make his role in her life much bigger. We'll see...

Yolanda Renée said...

Hey Chrys, I've been meaning to email you all day! Will do so as soon as I write this. I find it hard to believe you've ever been unlucky in love! But if so, then I wish you to find the man of your dreams!

Yolanda Renée said...

Hi Robyn:
I've been reading your book. Can't wait to write a review. Hope it's doing well! Thanks for the benefit of the doubt, but I don't consider myself a poet, I just sometimes write that way! You are so wonderful and never fail to make me smile. Hope your holiday and New Year were magnificent!
I can't wait to read your poem!

I'm thinking,if I were writing this story, that they would find each other...soon. It is nice and edgy, Yolanda. Love how much you've managed in a few words. I like the way this guy talks. He obviously has it bad for Jewel. :-)

Kalpana said...

Wonderful story. The dialogue format works very well specially because the words are so terse while the story has so many layers. Leaves so much to the imagination. Sadly my earlier, longer comment was deleted because I was attempting to comment from my phone.

Yolanda Renée said...

I would love to have read your deleted comment, but your words here are lovely, thank you! I find this is the best way to write a Flash Fiction piece when words are at a minimum!

Yolanda Renée said...

He has it very bad, Denise! I'm wondering though, how Jewel feels. :) Thanks for stopping during this very busy time!

Such a painful tale of unrequited love! Although the circumstances are tragic, it leaves me fervently wishing these two will come together. Wonderful piece, Yolanda!
I'm looking forward to participating on Feb. 1.

Elizabeth Seckman said...

Oh my gosh. I told you I was just soaking up your rays. That's just awesome. My romantic heart will fill in the gaps. She'll forgive him for lending her husband the plane and they'll live happily ever after.

Goose bump worthy writing...way to go!

Nice piece of flash fiction. I enjoyed it.
Despite his friend, he should have been more "hands on" if you get my meaning.
However, I can certainly identify. I always seem to be the friend who is a joker and has a heart of gold, but that's about as far as most women see.
Which is pretty much why I won't be joining the February blog-fest. I'll just sit back and read everyone else's tales. Have a good 2016!

For some reason I thought she'd turn out to be a painting ... though how a painting would have a husband I don't know. LOL! Very enjoyable! :)

Yolanda Renée said...

Thanks Debbie, and I hope the WEP on the 17th. Why not, just continue the story. LOL I may continue with this story for both??? :)

Yolanda Renée said...

You're too kind, Elizabeth, thank you. I may continue this story for the hops in February, then again, maybe not. LOL It'll be a blast, but gosh I have to run - now I have two new flashes to write!

Yolanda Renée said...

I think your story would be amazing. I wish you'd share it. But either way, we'll enjoy your comments. Thanks for your kind words. My hubby felt the same way you do, and we're still together! (We eloped on Feb. 14th)

Yolanda Renée said...

Hi Lexa, she is a painting - my inspiration for the story. LOL But that's a great murder mystery from the black and white era. One of my favorites. The detective falls in love with the painting of a woman who was murdered and he's investigating her death. I think it's called Laura. I'll have to look it up. Great story!

Susan Flett Swiderski said...

Alas, I don't see a happy ending in their future, and not just because you're the one telling the tale. :)

Hmnmm, I might have to participate in that Lost and Found blogfest. Sounds like fun, and I haven't dabbled in a fest for a long time. (Not a single one this year!)

I finished reading your "zombies" book, and will post a review asap. We've been away most of the holidays, and I'm in catch-up mode now. (You already know I enjoyed your book, right? Right!) Happy New Year!

Yolanda Renée said...

You know me too well> I don't either. Writing him, I didn't like him at all, and a mystery has already started to form - I was writing it in my head on the way into town today. This one may actually become a book or novella. We'll see. And yes, of course you love it. :) Thanks a million!

We've got a nice start to blog hop sign-ups. I look forward to seeing what people will write about. I think we'll have some real diversity.
