The opening sentence for the January 15th Flash Fiction for the Purposeful Practitioner:  ” We were within a mile-and-a-half of the service roads when we found it.”

This challenge is open until 11:00 pm Thursday night, January 21st .

This weekly challenge can now be found on TWITTER and FACEBOOK. Check us out there.

DOPPELGANGER

"We were within a mile-and-a-half of the service roads when we found it."

The birds circling overhead caught our attention. We'd hoped to find the hikers before sunset. We never imagined anything like this.

Eviscerated bodies. The birds and larger animals had already consumed their eyes and carried off most of their organs.

Two young men who went out for a day's hike had met a monster.

We called the police and CSI. Lights lit the scene and a tarp protected the bodies while five men gathered evidence.

At midnight, howls of an animal stopped us cold. The beast attacked. Somehow, I survived.

I apologize for not being active these last few weeks. Life has a way of ruining changing plans.
It was a real pain in the ass chance to practice my flexibility.
At least, that's what I'm telling myself.
Thank you for visiting, reading, and commenting. I will do my best to reciprocate.

Gruesome story. Poor guys I hope they died fast. At least your main character survived. But how could he be responsible for such carnage. Unless, he was the beast himself? Great writing.

Ooh, intriguing end. Is he being blamed because no-one wants to believe in a monster, or is he indeed the monster? If so, maybe he doesn't even realise, he just wakes up sometimes in the woods covered in blood...
Great story!

Crappy ending for the narrator. Unless as Amanda said, he's actually the beast.

Hmm sounds like he may be the nut case that is offing everyone.

Oh that's good! I love monster stories like this where people are attacked and killed in the woods, etc. I think this could be a great concept for a longer story. :)

That gave me the shivers! Great piece to accompany that image: cold and forbidding.

Deliciously creepy, as always. Reminds me of Cherie Reich's "Once Upon a Nightmare" collection of creepy stories set in some creepy woods. It'd fit right in. Great job, but I don't foresee a happy ending for the narrator.

Lots of imagery to turn my stomach so early in the morning my friend. Now what sort of a monster is it, I'm thinking...and will the narrator survive long term? Hmmmmm...

I remember an episode of the original CSI where they found some guy's body on a hillside, eaten up by wild animals and stuff. The imagery always set with me, but I could never think of anything to use it in.. this is great!

Hi Yolanda,

Just here to catch up. Sorry to hear about life messing with your plans, I know you'll get them back on their feet soon. The flash was amazing-chilling as usual!
Best always,
Nila.

Thanks Amanda - I wanted it to be open for interpretation.

Hi Alistair, good question. I wonder what the answer is? :)

Yolanda Renée said...

Hi Alex, crappy ending is one way to put it. :)

Yolanda Renée said...

Hi Pat, nut case is an understatement. :)

Hey Chrys:
I used to see monsters in the woods when I was a child. Never wanted to be there alone! :)

Yolanda Renée said...

Thanks Lee, it's the story the image inspired.

Yolanda Renée said...

Hi Susan,
I read that one too. Cherie did a great job! Lot's of unanswered question in that story too. No happy ending in this one!

Yolanda Renée said...

Sorry Denise, good questions. I wonder too. :)

Thanks Lucky!

Hi Madilyn, one of my favorite shows, CSI - thanks, this picture did inspire me, in an odd way! :)

Hi Nila,
Still dealing, still catching up - but moving forward. Thanks!

Is "he" the monster or the only survivor but has a story no one will believe? Enjoyed! Hope to see you next week.
