WARS & BATTLES

A flash fiction challenge of 100 words or less

WARS & BATTLES

John fought to come home just for them. When he left, she was pregnant. He knew his daughter, Jenny, only through Mary's words and photographs. He couldn't wait to hold them close. His mission finally ended, he boarded the plane home.

50 years later

At the cemetery, he watched them play, both so beautiful, unchanging, and full of love for him. He'd survived the war, but a drunk driver on the way to his next drink stole them from him.

He hoped Mary would be glad to hear that he only had weeks left. Cancer would win this final battle.

Very sad twists. But you got a lot into the small story. :)

Hi Deboarh, thanks for stopping by. Yes, sad, cemeteries seem to bring up such stories.

Hi Pat, true, such losses, sometimes unbearable.

Poor guy made it through the war and then got cancer AND runover by a drunk driver?? You sure take the "torture your characters" seriously! LOL! (I do too -- you should see the horrible things I inflict on my hero and heroine in my current WIP. I'm such a meanie!)

Oh, so sad and touching and terrible~ You can drive the emotions-wow~

Oh, darn I do need to visit. I have to run, but will be back to check it out-thanks for reminding me!
Happy Friday!

You meanie.

Sometimes the battles people face outside of war are as bad, if not worse, than those we face off of it. At least in war, we're given weapons to fight back. Doesn't always happen in real life.

Yet another super spin on the prompt. (I guess it's too much to hope for to ever encounter a happy ending, eh? HA!)

Happy weekend, kiddo.

Oh, the sad cruelty of life conveyed in that piece is heartbreaking. Battles aren't exclusive to war.

Yolanda Renée said...

Hi Lexa,
Yes, he got through the war but his wife and daughter died because of a drunk driver. Now he's dying from cancer. But you're right I do torture my characters. Just expressing emotions long ago suppressed - writing brings it all to the surface and I always go where the characters lead. :)

Hi Ella,
I'm just so happy to see you out and about! Get caught up and yes, come back!

Hi Susan,
I'll work on that, promise. ;)
Happy weekend to you too!

Very sad and full of twists. You got a lot of story into this one!

An entire life's tragedy in 100 words - well done!

Dear Yolanda Renee,

My husband's cousin returned from Viet Nam only to perish in car accident a few weeks later. Life is full of irony.

C- I think the addition of cancer was overkill and felt somewhat forced. The fact that he survived the war but died at the hands of a drunk driver was enough. But that's my opinion.

Shalom,

Rochelle
